What Does it Take To Be a Great Account Manager?

A friend of mine recently posted an opening for an Account Manager position at his business. I’ve heard several different definitions of what an Account Manager might do, so I thought I would look it up. I ran across an excellent article that I believe applies well not only to Account Management, but to the art of Administration in general.

So, here I reprint the article by Chris Thurling, managing director of 3Sixty in Bristol, UK. I will add a few editorial comments here and there to explain some of his Brit-centric terminology.


Technology may be changing the knowledge needed to be an account manager; but I think that the qualities needed to do the job are pretty timeless. Of course, the perfect account manager doesn’t exist but if they did they might look something like this:
